Google Passes Yahoo

On information by Bloomberg News, Google, the search engine company, displaced Yahoo as the world’s second-most-visited Web site in November and closed in on the leader, Microsoft, a market researcher said yesterday.

Visitors to Google’s sites rose 9.1 percent, to 475.7 million in November from a year earlier, while those to Yahoo sites rose 5.2 percent, to 475.3 million, the researcher, ComScore Networks, said. Both sites trail Microsoft, which had 501.7 million visitors, ComScore said.
It was the first time that Google, based in Mountain View, Calif., attracted more visitors than Yahoo, reflecting Google’s growing popularity outside the United States. Yahoo, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., is still the most-visited site within the United States, ComScore said. Microsoft’s visitors increased 3.3 percent from a year earlier.

Visitors to Fox Interactive Media sites, owned by the News Corporation, rose almost fivefold, to 130.4 million, in November from a year ago, reflecting a surge from the purchase of

Visitors at YouTube, bought by Google for $1.65 billion in November, rose more than 24-fold to 107.9 million, ComScore said.

So, we have the prevailing but frankly saying cheeky company Google as an opponent. Our opponent has diverse interests in Internet, but its main sinecure is bound up however with on-line advertisement.

How to fight with it?

I would produce a plugin for MS Internet Explorer, resembling extension AdBlock for Firefox, that let to block internet-advertisment and contexone.
  1. this plugin should let user to block contents, coming both from the definite domain names and range of IP-adresses, in one-two clicks. Its clear that it should be done so that the user doesn't even think about what is "domain" and what is "IP-adress".

MySpace do Yahoo!

As wrote ComScore, the online hangout MySpace got even more popular in November, beating Yahoo in Web traffic for the first time, a research company said Tuesday.

News Corp.'s MySpace recorded 38.7 billion U.S. page views last month, compared with 38.1 billion for Yahoo, according to comScore Media Metrix. MySpace's growth was 2 percent over October and triple the 12.5 billion recorded in November 2005.

The numbers underscore the rapid rise of a social-networking site that encourages visitors to stay and make friends through free tools for messaging, sharing photos and creating personal pages known as profiles.

ComScore warned, however, that a one-month change could represent an aberration. Furthermore, Yahoo's page views could be diminished by the company's growing use of Ajax technology for maps, e-mail and other services. Ajax is a set of tools that speeds up Web applications by summoning snippets of data as needed instead of pulling entire Web pages over and over.

Yahoo, which last week announced a major reorganization after finding itself repeatedly beat in advertising sales by rival Google Inc., still remains the leader in unique audience, with 130 million visitors in November.

"Yahoo continues to be the overall Web audience leader with the largest number of unique users and most time spent online. The page view change in November is related to the use of Ajax and other Web 2.0 technologies across the Yahoo network," Yahoo spokeswoman Nissa Anklesaria said.

In the first top 10 searches in the Google are, The New York Times and Wikipedia. So, what the's wrote about Kim:

James Kim was a respected expert on cutting-edge digital devices, an owner of a trendy clothing store and a lover of the futuristic-sounding music known as electronica.
Yet, according to friends, most of Kim's life revolved around old-fashioned values: sacrifice, friendship and family. Those who knew him say they aren't surprised that Kim, in the last act of his life, demonstrated the ultimate expression of devotion to his wife and daughters.
The body of the 35-year-old Kim was discovered Wednesday in a rugged wilderness area in southern Oregon. He had set out across snow and ice with only tennis shoes to protect his feet. He had eaten little in the seven days since his car got stuck.

Indeed, he was praised for his resourcefulness by authorities in Grants Pass, Ore., who organized the search and described his efforts as "superhuman." According to interviews with Kim's in-laws, he lifted his family's spirits by acting as if they were all just on a campout.
Friends say that they couldn't think of anyone who could have fared any better than Kim in the same situation. He was known as a problem solver and a man with unlimited energy who never lost his cool. Kim was raising a family and holding down a full-time job as a product reviewer for CNET, while operating two retail stores with his wife and working on a book for McGraw-Hill about Microsoft's new digital-music player, the Zune.
"He was always trying to learn more, always gorging himself on new information...I don't think James slept much."

Kim was a "rising star" in the gadget community, said Lindsey Turrentine, Kim's supervisor at CNET. He had built a loyal following among geeks, music fans and the gadget-obsessed with his insights on MP3 players and other consumer devices.
Jasmine France, an associate editor at CNET who worked for Kim, said he spent most of his workdays amassing knowledge about the latest music players, mining the Web for new facts and talking on the phone with vendors or the many sources he had accumulated.
"He was always connected," France said. "He was always trying to learn more, always gorging himself on new information...I don't think James slept much."
There are plenty of hyperachievers in the world, but what made Kim special, said France, is that amid the chaos of his daily routine, whether he was testing a new gadget or shuttling between his two stores or carting his children to the park, he always had to time to ask about her life.
She said she shared a rare relationship with Kim. "How many people are friends with their boss?" wondered France.
Kim earned his friend's respect by the way he treated people, but many of them revered him for the way he cared for his family.

Zemlicka, who worked with Kim at TechTV during the mid-1990s, was introduced to his wife by Kim. Zemlicka asked him to be one of his two best men at his wedding.
Zemlicka says he admired Kim's taste in music, as well as his discipline and dedication to his passions--specifically his family.
Four years ago, Kim, Zemlicka and their group of friends discovered golf, and Kim fell in love. Not only did he enjoy the game, he also basked in the camaraderie, Zemlicka said. But when daughter Penelope was born, Kim gave up the sport and never looked back, Zemlicka said.
"He wouldn't even sneak away for a few hours once in a while to play nine holes," Zemlicka said. "The truth is that it wasn't that big of a sacrifice--hanging out with a bunch of guys. James had more important things to tend to. He taught me to be a dedicated husband. He's always putting his wife and kids first."
Felix Magtoto, a UPS driver who delivers to the store the Kims own in San Francisco's Noe Valley district, often bonded with Kim over the importance of family. Both of Magtoto's daughters worked for the Kims, and the two men frequently discussed the pleasure of being the lone man in a house full of women.
On the stoop of Magtoto's house, the two men sometimes sipped Hennessy and smoked cigars, and Kim would ask the 53-year-old Magtoto for advice on being a father and husband.
"I saw myself in James," Magtoto said Wednesday after learning of Kim's death. "I liked him because he loved his family the way I love my family. Whatever it took, he wanted to give them everything they needed."

Mystic Orion

There are many guesses and conjecture agitate a mind about new Orion algorithm by Google (by Ori Allon).

Most on the web take this to mean the results from Google will be displayed similar to those at where you will be able to get a sample of the site and some of it's quality content without having to visit the actual site. The part that most caught my attention however is where he cited the example and noted the additional phrases that would be considered and the impact having this technology will have on the way queries are dealt with.

From this standpoint, the Orion Algorithm, in its essence, is a whole new way to score the value of websites that appear on the Internet. Rather than determining the value of a website based on the specific query being entered into the search box, Orion may dig deeper and query related phrases as well. Now, this may not be an entirely new concept, directories have been providing a "Related Categories" option for ages however the addition of this function to standard search engines and what this may well mean for the methods required to rank sites on them is extremely significant.

One of the main hurdles that SEO's will face in reaction to this new function is determining exactly how the additional relevant phrases are determined. There are a few possible sources the come to mind.

1. Directories (least likely)

The directories are already using "Related Categories". It is possible that the engines will choose the simplest possible means of determining relevancy and opt to use sub-categories of a directory listing and to use the "Related Categories" as the supplemental keyword sources.

Alternatively they could simply run the search itself on their directories and reference the categories that come up and run supplemental searches for those categories. The main drawback to this approach is that many popular keywords would not be cross-reference accurately. For example, a search for "seo" would result in a supplemental search set of "promotion", "web design and development", Internet marketing" along with a variety of other phrases. While these phrases are related by industry a visitor searching for "seo" may well not be interested in "web design and development".

2. Thesaurus (unlikely)

It may be that the engines choose to reference a thesaurus for related phrases however this doesn't work for many keyword phrases. Single word phrases would be doable however multiple keyword phrases would be far more difficult and acronyms (such as "seo") would find no related words in the more common thesauruses.

3. Search Behavior (highly likely)

The most likely source of the relevancy data is also the most difficult to predict and this is search behavior patterns. While I have had some disagreements with members on a couple SEO forums over whether the search engines can in fact know your search patterns, the conclusion is that they indeed can under many circumstances. Search engines will be able to compile enough data based on the users they are documenting to assess overall search behavior (and here you thought all those great tools the engines come out with were just them spending their money altruistically).

If Google "knows" that after someone enters "seo" as a query they follow that up with "seo service", this is likely to then be used as a supplemental search. Similarly, if they also know that these same searchers tend to also search shortly before or after for another common phrase, say "w3c compliance" then this too is likely to be used as a supplemental search.

Now that we have a better idea of what the Orion Algorithm is and how it works the big question is, what will it's implementation mean to search engine users and to how websites get ranked on those engines. At this time there appears to be two main schools of thought...

Fortunately, while there may be some disagreement in regards to how this new algorithm will be integrated into the search engine results pages the resulting actions required are the same. Whether the new functions will be added in the form of additional links and information on the results pages or whether they will be taken into consideration when ranking the site for the initial query, sites that rank well for a multitude of related phrases will fare better than those that rank for just one of the phrases.

The action required then on the part of SEO's and website owners is to provide quality unique content on all the possible areas that may be considered relevant to the main keyword target. Once this is accomplished then these areas need to be promoted in order to insure that they rank well.

The resulting web will be one that rewards websites with a large amount of quality content on the highest number of topics related to a specific issue. If one considers the end goal of any of the major search engines, to provide the most relevant results possible, this new technology is sure to help promote these types of results and insure that the searcher is receiving results that are likely to provide the information they're looking for.

And let's also consider this: should you choose to be an "early adopter" and begin making changes to your site, adding new content, optimizing it and getting it ranking well, what will the results be? Even if Orion isn't implemented for another decade your website will gain stickiness and rank for more related keywords bringing you more targeted traffic and keeping it on your site. Could this possibly be a bad thing?

While I have strived to provide some insight into the Orion Algorithm and what it means to you, there is a lot of information/speculation out there regarding what it means and also covers other implementations of this technology not discussed in this article. This algorithm is sure to have an enormous impact on the way searchers find results and the way SEO's promote sites and thus, you need to have all the quality information at your disposal to make the right decisions for you website and your business.

I don't say that Google is fully representative internet spirit. Today Yahoo! Inc. released its list of the most popular search terms of 2006.

Who is michael richards/kramer?

Michael Richards exploded in anger as he performed at a famous L.A. comedy club last Friday, hurling racial epithets that left the crowd gasping, and TMZ has obtained exclusive video of the ugly incident.

Richards, who played the wacky Cosmo Kramer on the hit TV show "Seinfeld," appeared onstage at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood. Kyle Doss, an African-American, told TMZ he and some friends were in the cheap seats and he was playfully heckling Richards when suddenly, the comedian lost it.

The camera started rolling just as Richards began his attack, screaming at one of the men, "Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a f***ing fork up your ass."

Richards continued, "You can talk, you can talk, you're brave now motherf**ker. Throw his ass out. He's a nigger! He's a nigger! He's a nigger! A nigger, look, there's a nigger!"

The crowd is visibly and audibly confused and upset. Richards responds by saying, "They're going to arrest me for calling a black man a nigger."

One of the men who was the object of Richard's tirade was outraged, shouting back "That's un-fucking called for, ain't necessary."

After the three-minute tirade, it appears the majority of the audience members got up and left in disgust.
